Artificial insemination is the infertility treatment used for the patients who are not able to conceive naturally. In this approach, the sperm is delivered to the uterus directly to increase the chances of conception. In this guide we are going to discuss in brief the treatment of artificial insemination for your understanding.

What is the process of Artificial insemination?

During the artificial insemination, the sperm is inserted into the uterus directly to make the women conceive. It includes 2 methods: ICI and IUI. In some cases, the medications are given to stimulate the ovaries for increasing egg production as well as conception chances.

How is the process done?

To conceive successfully, the sperm need to travel the vagina through the cervix, then to the uterus and finally the fallopian tube where the egg will be fertilized. But, in some cases, the sperm does not travel or the cervix is not allowing the sperm to enter the fallopian tube. In these cases, the artificial insemination is helpful to get pregnant. The IVF doctor can recommend you these treatments

  • You are trying for 6 months to conceive and older than 35.
  • You are trying for one year to conceive and younger than 35.

In some cases, along with these treatments ICSI is also used. When you visit the doctor, she is going to let you know which treatment option will suit you best to improve conception chances.

ICI

With ICI, the sperm is inserted into the cervix. Under this method, these steps are included:

  • The ovulation cycle is monitored and ultrasound is done. In some cases, medications are given to stimulate the ovaries so that egg production is increased.
  • The male partner will give the sperm sample in the doctor’s clinic.
  • The sperm is inserted into the vagina with a special syringe.
  • The treatment takes 15 to 30 minutes and the women need to lay down. The woman can get back to her normal working routine within 2 weeks. After that, a pregnancy test is done to find out the results.

  • The semen is washed to remove the protein which might affect fertilization. This way the sperm can move properly and increase the chances of conception.
  • The doctor will use the speculum so that the uterus is easy to access.

What are the advantages?

Following are the advantages of using artificial insemination:
