Appendix Surgery in Punjab
What is an appendix?
The appendix is an organ that is situated just below the (on the right side of the stomach). It is narrow and has a shape like a finger. The appendix connects to the large intestine but it does not perform any function in human beings. Appendectomy is the name given to the surgery of appendix removal if it is inflamed. An inflamed appendix may rupture and cause an infection called peritonitis in the abdominal area.
What is Laparoscopic Appendectomy?
It is the name given to the surgery in which the appendix is removed due to appendicitis or inflammation of the appendix. The appendix removal operation requires an emergency basis as leaving it untreated could lead to the rupture of the appendix, which can cause a fatal infection. The surgery usually takes an hour. If the appendix has not burst, the patient may be discharged within a span of 24-36 hours but if there is rupturing, then the infection treatment may take 5-7 days to heal.
You must see the doctor regarding your condition if you have rectal bleeding. It may be an indication of colon polyps, colitis, or Crohn’s disease. If the Hemorrhoidal bleeding is excessive, it can cause anaemia.
Preparation for the Surgery
Most cases are emergencies and the patient might get the surgery done in a span of a few hours. Before the surgery, the patient is given antibiotics. The doctor gives the anaesthesia depending on the health of the patient and the last meal that he ate.
Surgical Procedure
- The surgeon makes 2-3 small incisions near the belly button of the patient.
- The surgeon inserts the laparoscope through an incision to view the appendix.
- He inserts a tube and fills the abdominal space with carbon dioxide to inflate the abdomen.
- He then inserts surgical instruments through one of the incisions.
- The surgeon will find the appendix, clip it, and disconnect it from the large intestine. He will remove the appendix through the incision.
- In case the appendix has burst, the surgeon will clean the abdomen to rule out any chances of the infection spreading.
- After cleaning, the air from the abdomen will be released.
- After the removal, the incisions will be closed with the help of sutures or self-dissolving stitches.
- The incisions may be covered with skin glue or adhesive strips. This area uses for covering shallow cuts. The glue and the strips fall off as soon as the incision heals. In case the strips use, the surgeon will cover them with gauze which will remove after 48 hours. The child may experience infection or bleeding after the surgery.
