Reproductive Surgeries

Reproductive Surgery in Women

Some women have a problem conceiving due to some medical conditions of their reproductive system. It may be due to some birth defect like the anomaly in the uterus and the complete absence of the vagina. It may also be due to some acquired conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, or polyps. In such cases, the woman may need corrective surgery. Surgeries that aim to correct problems with the reproductive system are known as reproductive surgeries. Reproductive Surgery in Women is recommended before opting for assisted reproductive treatment such as IVF. It is crucial in detecting the problems which may be causing infertility.

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a process in which a tubular structure inserts into the uterine cavity. This allows the surgeon to look deeply inside the uterine cavity and determine the existence of certain conditions like uterine septum, scar tissue, polyps, or fibroids. It allows the doctor to determine and resolve the anatomical problems which might be causing infertility.

Laparoscopy

In this procedure, a tubular structure inserts into the body through the navel of the patient. It helps the doctor in viewing the internal condition of the pelvic organs and determining if endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts or exist. It also helps in determining if there is scarring of the tissue or fallopian tubes. The benefit of this type of treatment is that the condition may resolve alongside the diagnosis. It is a minimally invasive method that causes the least trauma to the patient.

Laparotomy

In this, an incision is made in the abdomen and the doctor can access the abdominal and pelvic cavities. This procedure requires a big incision and may need a longer time to heal. But it is possible to do the same procedure through mini-laparotomy. This procedure involves making a small incision and causes much less discomfort to the patient. Laparotomy lets the surgeon view the existence of pelvic problems like ovarian cysts, ruptured ectopic pregnancy, uncontrolled haemorrhage, and uterine fibroids. The doctor can discuss the results of a Laparotomy before a planned surgery to apprise the patient of the risks and benefits associated with the procedure. It is highly recommended before opting for major surgery as it helps decide on the treatment.
