Hernia Repair Surgery

A hernia is a condition in which an organ shows an abnormal exit through the wall of the cavity in which it is situated. It happens mostly in the abdomen area. The condition is usually rectified using surgery. The surgery for treat Hernia may be of three types:
  • Open surgery
  • Laparoscopic surgery
  • Robotic surgery

Open Hernia Repair Surgery

It is the conventional method of operating in the affected area. Once the sack containing the bulging organ is located, the surgeon pushes it back into the abdomen. He further strengthens the wall with a synthetic mesh and stitches. Usually, the patient can be discharged after a few hours. He or she needs to stay away from strenuous activity and vigorous exercise for 4-6 weeks.

Laparoscopic Hernia Repair Surgery

This surgery involves the insertion of the laparoscope through the incision just below the navel. The surgery requires the use of general anaesthesia. It is thus necessary for the surgeon to assess the general health of the patient. The patient’s medical history, ECG, and physical examination should perform before the surgery to avoid any complications later.
The laparoscope helps the doctor get an internal view of the body which displays on a big screen in the surgery room. At the start of the hernia surgery, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide to help the doctor in viewing the internal structure of the body. The surgeon then proceeds to cut the peritoneum, which is the inner lining of the abdomen. After the cut, he can see the area where the weakness lies. The abdominal wall is repaired by covering the defects and placing a mesh to strengthen the wall. After the procedure, the incisions are closed using stitches or surgical tape. The stitches fade away after healing.
This kind of surgery has some benefits:
  • Many tiny incisions instead of one big incision.
  • Less pain post-surgery
  • Short recovery period
  • The patient can resume his daily routine quite early

Robotic Hernia Repair Surgery

The surgery, as the name suggests is performed using a laparoscope but the surgeon handles all the proceedings using a console. The surgeon, instead of directly dealing with the surgery manipulates the instruments through the console. The surgery was used for small hernias in the past but nowadays it has become common in the reconstruction of the abdominal wall as well. Robotic surgery offers excellent three-dimensional images of the internal organs and makes it easy for the surgeon to sew the tissue and mesh it inside the organ. This kind of surgery also makes it less traumatic for the patient as the incisions are smaller and the recovery time is faster.
